Iraq - It's Time to Go

The world is a dangerous place and Iraq has to rank among the most frightening on the planet. I have supported the Bush Administration in the past on the push to find and terminate terrorists. I will support that endeavor in the future in almost any place at any time, but in Iraq - it's time to go.

Now I don't advocate flying in C-5's, C-141's and C-130's and abandoning the place... but I do believe we must make our intentions known that we are departing and tell the Iraqi people to get ready to take care of themselves. If they truly care about their country and what we have done for them, then they will answer the call and begin rooting out the insurgents that are causing the chaos and death.

There are those in the media and those outside of the media that despise President Bush and thus their objectivity of evaluating the circumstances in Iraq was compromised long ago. I on the other hand feel that my initial support, and possible future support, of the president and his policies is more objective. I have seen what has taken place and have evaluated the facts and the mood of the country (from my perspective), and again - it's time to go.

The Bush Administration has made some serious mistakes since taking office, and they have made some great decisions too. No details offered on either assertion - but you cannot be POTUS and have a little of both.

Iraq was a slippery slope from the beginning. The American public had been delivered a preview of what should have happened in Iraq... The Gulf War - sterile and quick. Of course that has not been the case the second time around. Unforeseen events have presented themselves and worse yet, the press went negative... what a shocker. The overwhelming perception delivered 24/7 from the meda... things are out of control in Iraq and American's are dying for no good reason.

Joining most media outlets - practically every member of the Democratic Party. Partisan politics is such a mind blower, and that goes for Republicans who "partisan-up" for their own pet projects and platform standards.

Nothing of true value (i.e. love, respect or DEMOCRACY) ever comes from demand. The Bush White House cannot demand democracy for Iraq. The American Military cannot demand it for Iraq. It has to be earned by the people... OF IRAQ. They have to want it, fight for it and die for it. Every nation must go through this cycle. The world won't recognize it any other way.

It's time to make these things clear to the people of Iraq, and then, it's time to go.

Lost Marathon Weekend

Have you seen this show? This is what I call quality television - seriously! There is so much bad crap on TV that when you come across something that is this intriguing you've got to watch it.

Not since 24 have I seen a program format that is this good and so innovative. (If you have not seen 24 DO IT. The concept in 24 is that there are 24 episodes in the season and that each show is one hour in a 24 hour day. Very cool and of course 24 has received all types of rave reviews.) That's a lot of 24's in one paragraph...

Lost is just as good so far... I say so far because we are not done watching season one and it's in season two. Thanks to my friend Ron Marks who gave me the entire first season on DVD for my birthday, Katie and I are watching it all weekend in San Diego. Seriously.

With "Lost" there is this airplane that crashes on a deserted island and the plot follows the events that follow. What is cool about the format of the show is that each of the characters take shape "on" the island and "off" the island.

Time for dinner... more to come later tonight!

Okay we're back (we went to Lou and Mickey's - awesome filet) and we've now watched 16 episodes and there are only 8 left to go. I bought the first 8 episodes on iTunes and watched them on my laptop... the DVD's are much better.

7 episodes left and it's 10:42pm.

Okay at some time during the night we fell asleep and I don’t recall what episode we were on when we passed out, but we picked things up at 7am. What drama… someone died, a baby was born, a former Iraqi Republican Guard hooked up with a swim suit model (who was in love with her step brother and was conning him for money – lucky for him, he’s the dead guy.)

Well we have four episodes left. I feel exactly how I’ve felt every time I’ve gotten to this same point with “The West Wing.” I know it’s almost over and I don’t want it to end. That’s happened to me FIVE times and I don’t want it to happen again. Luckily, I have already purchased the first 14 episodes of Lost Season Two on iTunes and have installed TIVO at home. Within one week Katie and I will be caught up and watching the show LIVE (when we want to thanks to the DVR.)

Now if only 24 would post its shows up on iTunes I could catch up and find out what terrorist cell Jack’s been whacking!

Just in case you think that we’re really boring people, we’re not, well I am, but Katie is certainly not. We had dinner with Jared and Sylvia, we hit the Hotel Del and we shopped at Nordstrom. What else is there to life…? LOST baby. Lost.

King Funeral Hijacking

This is a picture of the late Mrs. Martin Luther King Jr. who passed away earlier this month. As a white male, I can only appreciate Mrs. King (and Mr. King) from my own perspective. They were not symbols of any personal cause of mine. I have known no racial wars and have not been the victim of a single racial incident. So it may be a bit odd that I had always been impressed with Coretta Scott King.

Mrs. King always seemed so poised and beautiful when she would end up in the spotlight of the news, usually around February and usually tied to the cause of civil rights. That's it, there is not much more that I can say about her. What a wonderful life she must have had after enduring the incredible tragedy of losing her husband. May her family be comforted and her good works truly do good for other people.

Now to the hijacking...

In my life I have had the opportunity to participate in over a dozen funerals. Babys, children and many older men and women who lived long lives. Everyone of them was a spiritual experience. Everyone of them had two key and identical attributes: 1. They addressed the life of the departed loved one and 2. They addressed the plan of salvation and the concept that there is life after death and that there is opportunity in death, an opportunity for the living who remain to be better men and women.

I listened to President George W. Bush give his eulogy at Mrs. King's funeral and it reminded me of the great burden and difficult task it is to speak at a funeral. He did well. In his less than six minute talk he spoke of Mrs. King's strength and contributions. I learned something about her and her family. I knew she was a Christian woman and that Mr. Bush was a Christian man.

Somehow a sacred service that should maybe last an hour, or perhaps an hour and a half drug on for 6 hours... and turned political. Some of the comments from the people who spoke (including former President Carter) were totally inappropriate, not only for a funeral, but inappropriate when directed at President Bush who was in attendance, sitting directly behind the podium. Zero class on the part of many of the speakers.

If my mother was being laid to rest and this type of crap was going on I would blow a gasket. I wonder which of the King children will be on CNN with Larry King to complain and that their mother's funeral was no place to be talking politics.

Shame on everyone who walked up onto that stage with an agenda or a desire to have attention drawn to themselves in place of Mrs. King.

RIP Coretta.

Amanda Update

Recently our family held a fast for our daughter Amanda and I had a number of people ask "how is she ?" Here is some feedback... As you can see from this picture she is beautiful and continues to grow stronger everyday. We attribute her strength to the fact that she is in constant motion... imagine doing aerobics 18 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year. This girl is rarely not moving and it is difficult to keep up.

Her autistic characteristics continue to be lack of speech, doing repetitive tasks and limited comprehension. That is not to say she doesn't make sounds, understand what you are saying to her or respond to you - it's just in her own unique way. Thankfully she is still very loving and is open to hugs and kisses.

The most challenging aspect for our family is that with the busy "going ons" of the other six members of the household Amanda can get lost in her own little world. To truly know her you have to go to that world and "pull her out" by engaging her and understanding her. If you aren't willing to work at it - you won't get in.

She has all of our love, but she needs more of our time. Other than Katie, our entire family needs to work at this... we owe it to ourselves to know our youngest daughter and sister. She is such a riot. Her favorite pastimes include:

Watching Arthur DVD's
Streaking
Getting Dressed
Streaking
Doing therapy with Roseanne and our other fantastic therapists
Going to Ms. Angie's house
Streaking (you get the idea on the streaking - it's a common thing)

Every evening is an adventure with Amanda. Many times I'll ask "is she asleep" and when the answer is yes my heart jumps, knowing that Katie will be sleeping with me rather than on a bean bag, couch or the floor with Amanda.

Katie is so incredible and as I have mentioned before, she makes our experience with Amanda a blessing and a learning experience.

We love this little girl.

Thank You Curtis...

This is my nephew Curtis and his new wife Alisha who were married this past week. I so am inspired by this picture and by the possibilities that lay before them. These are truly awesome people; however, they are not unique in our family. They are in fact part of a legacy of incredible young men and women and I want to thank Curtis - again.

You see I already thanked him right after he was married. I thanked him for being an example to my children. For being an Eagle Scout, for serving a mission for his church and for being married in the right place at the right time.

I knew exactly what I wanted to say to Curtis because I said the same thing to his brother Chad, and his cousins David, Spencer and Jared. Each Eagle Scouts, each missionaries and each has made their mark on the lives of my children.

There is nothing so powerful as a positive example... so I say thank you to each of the nephews and nieces of my wife Katie and I... thank you Christine, Catherine, Chad, Curtis, David, Spencer, Kristin, Chelsea, Nicole, Jared, Jeremy and Justin.

Thank you so much.

iPod Nano Rocks!

Apple I salute you! I am enjoying my Nano (white by the way), and must admit this is the best MP3 player I've ever owned... and I've owned a few. My first digital music player was a Creative Labs unit and I loved it. I lost my first unit when I left it on a flight to Washington DC so I replaced it with the same type unit with more memory.

Creative Labs eventually made a smaller unit with even more memory and I snapped that one up in a minute. Eventually I purchased a Zen Micro and never quite got the hang of utilizing it to it's fullest extent. Although the design was adequate, Windows Media Player 10 was the interface and it was a weak combination.

When the Nano appeared on the marketplace I was "smitten" and had a desire to own my first Apple product since I graduated from college in 1988 and bought a Macintosh.

The Nano rocks! It is the lightest unit on the market and with 4 gigs of memory it can hold just about everything you need to take with you on trips. Any iPod is really only as good as iTunes allows it to be. As I was preparing to switch to an iPod I began experimenting with iTunes. I found it to be more intuitive than Windows Media 10 and I don't think I'll ever go back... when it comes to music, I'm an Apple fan.

Finally let me address the scratches everyone has been talking about... it does get scratched. When i throw it in my bag and other items rub against the screen - it does scratch. Everything I've ever owned (except my Rolex Explorer II) that has a plastic or glass screen scratches.

I don't know who's driving the law suit against Apple and the Nano, but I don't see the challenge. I see great color and all of my favorite music on a one inch screen of beauty.

CNN's "Today Show"

I have never seen anything as weak as CNN, "the most trusted name in news?" What a joke.

The final blow for me was watching Headline News move to having two anchors who actually talk to each other. Playful banter back and forth, who cares what they have to say! This was the last serious news broadcast and now it's gone.

Why was it "serious?" Because it just reported news with very little opinion expressed in the delivery.

The first cable broadcast I ever saw was on Thanksgiving, 1980 and it was Headline News... that was 25 years ago. For a lot of reasons I remember that date and have always had a sweet spot for HN even though I don't care for the CNN organization.

Well now that HN is moving in the direction of the Today Show I imagine they will be adding a weatherman soon who is slightly overweight and thinks he's funny.

I'm done.

If My Son Were President

My son Jack and I were walking through Washington DC this evening and I asked him an interesting question. "Jack" I said, "if you were president and you could make any law (I tried to explain an 'Executive Order') what would it be?"

Jack is 10 and a few decades away from qualifying for the presidency, but I think he had some interesting things to say.

1. Abolish School. I bet if you did a survey of 100 normal 10 years olds you'd get this one every time. I told Jack this was interesting and that he would be "the president of the stupidest country in the world" after only a few years and definately by the end of his second term.

2. Remove All Height Restrictions at Amusement Parks throughout the Country. Is this boy smart enough to be president or what! This is better than "Coke machines in every classroom" and he'd get every kid vote in the country. Karl Rove watch out...

3. Make Everything Free in Stores. Once again I had to step in and I said "well Jack, your Dad wouldn't want to own a store if everything had to be free, how would I make any money for our family?" He didn't get my point - but hey, he's only 10. Econ 101 and guns and butter are a few years away. The boy is a keeper - all my boys are sharp.

Is a Blog Still Cool?

Blogs are in the news. Business Week has blogs on the front cover, something about blogs taking over the business world and crushing every company in America.

I don't get the point of the piece but I do have a question - Is a Blog Still Cool? If blogs are on the front cover of Business Week I have my doubts. How cool is Business Week? Not very.

Blogging can be a great way to get thoughts out of your head and out in the open (which can be a bit dicey when the entire world has the capacity to see how bizarre you are AND that you can't spell all at the same time. Scairy.

Some blogs like my business blog www.sellingforresults.com have excellent content and serve as a resource for readers intelligent enough to take action on the recommendations given. Other blogs are just weak. Here's an entry from a fellow blogger that just makes me want to lay down and go to sleep - for a few years...

"I turned the comment feature off on my blog because I never get a lot of comments and I didn't like seeing the 0 Comment note at the bottom of each post. Until I installed a stat counter I never thought anybody, other than my buddies were even reading my ramble but it turns out that I get a fair number of hits - far more than I ever expected. Anyway, I figure I'll turn the comments back on should anyone feel the need to rip a post or point out the errors of my ways. To my buddies...you may continue to rip me by phoning me at work or hit me on MSN - I like the distraction at work. ;-)"

What a model employee this guy is... I hope he doesn't work for me!

Anyway I enjoy blogging and being on the cutting edge for now (until everyone reads Business Week). I have committed to write at least once a week here and once a month on http://www.sellingforresults.com/ so "to my buddies" please keep reading - but please do it on your own time.

Mr. President – Let’s Get it Done!

Well the year is almost over and on Christmas Eve I’m thinking about my family, my friends and our troops in the Middle East.

I lived in the Middle East for a year as a young Air Force enlisted man and know what it’s like to be away at Christmas in a very strange place… but I’ve never known war. I cannot imagine the reality of what is happening in the battle zones.

I support the war on terror and I support containing or eliminating any one – or any group – that is part of terrorism.

However, we need to get it done. Enough time has passed that we should have taken care of business in Afghanistan and Iraq. You can debate troop levels, pre-war planning, post-war planning blah blah blah. If we were serious, the job would be done.

So we need to get serious and bring our men and women home. That means all out war and not precision war. I’d like to see January 1st bring terror to the terrorist’s door, and until this happens I want President Bush to do the following:

1. Stop Smiling – Until we get these folks home stop smiling, stop looking happy, and let’s see this war president GET IT DONE!
2. Admit his errors in judgment and make changes being suggested by people smarter than I am. No plan is perfect so let’s start making corrections.
3. Stop trying to please countries, politicians, media groups or any other entity that doesn’t agree with your policies or decisions. They hate you – they take your overtures of peace and middle ground and spin them against you. Tell more of them to get stuffed!
4. Stop smiling – oh – I said that.
5. Be laser focused on this direction and leave any other business to someone else!

Mr. President – Let’s Get it Done!

Merry Christmas

Ex-Notre Dame Coach Nails Personal Accountability

This fall I accomplished a goal I’ve had for a couple of years… to see a Notre Dame game in South Bend. I put the whole thing together on a trip to Chicago and saw the Irish lose on the last play of the game to Boston College.

Truly and incredible college football game and experience – the pep rally the night before, the morning rain and constant storm clouds made for a lifetime of memories. The loss – it hurt.

I’m sure it hurt Coach Tyrone Willingham the most… as I was driving the wet Interstate back to Chicago I imagine the powers that be in Irish Football were making the only decision they could - Willingham was out and only a couple of wins including victory over SC could change that direction.

Harsh? Maybe, but winning at Notre Dame is not something that just happens – it’s a constant pursuit. If things are not progressing in that one direction then they are regressing, and that is where things stood the rainy afternoon of October 23rd in South Bend. After mass, the football gods got together and made the call - miracles or else.

Willingham is a class act. The other day in USA Today I read this quote and smiled. Tyrone Willingham had nailed the answer for why he was let go, and let go before his contract was over at Notre Dame.

Here it is:

“I understand that I did not meet the expectations or standards that I set for myself… and when you don't meet your own expectations, you make yourself vulnerable to the will of others."

That is accountability. No need to make excuses and I doubt he will do so in the future.

You know what’s great about taking 100% responsibility for your failure? This is it – you get to take 100% responsibility for your success. That is something we should all embrace.

Good luck Coach.

Top 10 Holiday Movies

I'm a power Netflix user and there are times when it's difficult to pick out something new to view when you are a movie nut... so I check out the reviews.

Everyone has a list except me. That Roger Ebert guy has a list (have you seen him lately - he looks fabulous!) There are over 30 critics listed on Netflix... how many critics does one site need?

Anyway - whenever I go to an event where they do an "ice breaker" with the group and it involves describing what I would do if I could do anything I always say the same thing. I'd be a movie critic... number 31.

So here is my top ten list of holiday movies:

1. Trains, Planes and Automobiles - watch it Thanksgiving evening and skip the rental car scene
2. It's a Wonderful Life - Classic and Donna Reed is a babe
3. While you Were Sleeping - This a fun movie and not because of Sandra Bullock
4. Home Alone - Classic
5. Home Alone 2 - Better than the first (very rare)
6. Home Alone 3 - JUST KIDDING
6. You've Got Mail - This movie just dances around the holidays but it makes the cut
7. White Christmas - I know this makes me look like a freak but I love that movie
8. A Christmas Story - This movie killed BB Gun sales all over the country
9. A Charlie Brown Christmas - Remember when this was the bomb?
10. Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer - this IS the bomb and there will never be anything close!

Merry Christmas!

"Usama Beat Me?" I call Bull%@#&

BS
Have you heard the phrase... "I'm callin bull%@#& on that!" Well John Kerry said Thursday (November 18th), that the tape aired a few days before the election featuring Usama bin Laden cost him the election.

Kerry said "It was that Usama tape - it scared them" (referring to the American People).

Well I'm callin bull%@#& on that! Kerry lost the election for a number of reasons that the talking heads are still hashing out. The Clinton Team screwed up, Kerry was an inept leader, no one in the Kerry campaign knew what was going on, there wasn't a clear message. Blah Blah Blah.

My take - that tape made it clear to everyone who watched it that George Bush had failed to capture bin-lame-o and that Usama was obviously still on the loose with the ability to make home videos.

This helped George Bush? I'm callin bull%@#& on that!

For weeks I had predicted a major terrorist attack on the United States - the attack would take place two weeks before the election - it never happened. Thankfully... it never happened. If it could have - it would have - make no doubt about it.

Evidently the United States has thrown a big wrench into the finance and operations of Usama and his men, but anything that called attention to the fact that Usama was still in the picture helped Kerry - including this video.

A Season for Peace

As the election season winds down and the "Sunday Shows" get that last lick in today on John Kerry and how he blew the election, why George Bush is still evil and how Hillary Clinton is only four years away from saving the world can we now turn to peace?

I certainly hope so...

Politicians and citizens in this country need to get to work on the challenges facing our great nation. This country deserves better representation and I hope the recent election purge that removed men like Tom Daschle from power and from the spotlight will help us move towards peace.

What peace? The peace that comes from knowing we live in the finest country at the best time in history. This is the time - this can be a season of peace. I'm not talking world peace, we have our troops committed to war around the globe. W. has told us there is a war on terror so we can't have peace right? Wrong! We need to embrace that peace that can come from unity among people.

Stop the hate, stop the accusations and stop the maneuvering for power. Show the world who we truly are as a country. Perhaps this appears a bit utopian but we have done it before.

Let's do it again. It starts with each one of us desiring a season of peace.

John Edwards' Dark Secret

The news is out... John Edward's father was a small business owner and a "consultant" too - a consultant for heavens sake!

This is unbelievable, and my Republican friends are shocked as well... BUT there is a concensus among us on this revelation from the Kerry-Edwards camp:

1. We're happy that the candidate's father actually "did well" (we like that success crap.)
2. We're not surprised that the millionaire lawyer didn't want his democrat base to know his father was ANYTHING other than a slave to the big bad mill owner (affluent democrats like that class warfare crap.)

Why would anyone focus on humble beginnings instead of eventual and lasting success? Because it sells with people who are humble and not looking to create success, but rather have it handed to them by people like Kerry-Edwards.

I'd like to know more about the senior Mr. Edwards. I don't know if he's living or passed but this would make an interesting show on "Biography."

If the man is still alive I bet he drives a Lexus and has a home on the beach. Like father like son - and I would be proud of both of them for their accomplishments.

Knowing What's Right

Have you ever thought you were doing the right thing and then someone hammers you and suddenly you're not sure of yourself? God gave me this gift of knowing what is right and wrong and I can't shake it! It's with me all the time... sounds good right?

The challenge is I don't always DO what's right - that's a tough place to be - knowing what's right and actually choosing what's wrong. I know that I am not alone in this challenge that I beleive all potentially successful people face. How do you get from potentially successful to successful? Start making that right choice - Duh.

Anyway, politics today must be eating potentially successful people ALIVE. Who do you trust with all of the negative information - too much - too often and too long since November is still a month away. I think I have the answer though - believe in yourself.

I just look at John Kerry and I know that he's Satan - can't you see it too - I know you can. This man will say anything, wear anything, go anywhere and DO anything to get elected. I can see it, feel it and hear it when he speaks.

It's not that he's a Democrat. That party has only themselves to blame for putting up crap candidates. I'd vote for a Democrat if he or she were an honest man or women - seriously. However this guy is dirty and he's bad for our country. Is it too late to scrap him and elevate John Edwards? He is so full of sunshine I think we can all feel good about him.

Bush... W. has his issues. He needs to admit mistakes and move on with his pursuit of freedom and the fight against terrorists. But he's not a fraud - you can feel it - I know you can. He's REAL and that means you'll get the truth. You may not like it or agree with it, but in the end - it's still the damn truth.

I don't care what Al Frankin says... I know I'm right.

No Sign of John Kerry

I recently spent a few days in Germantown, TN and had an opportunity to walk, run and drive through that incredible town. The homes, the grass and the TREES make this Arizona native seriously jealous.

As I traveled the different streets of Germantown, it became clear that many of its citizens are quite politically minded. Prominent on every street are signs for various elected offices… everything from the local alderman all the way to the POTUS.

I didn’t recognize any names for the alderman race - but for president guess whose signs were everywhere and guess whose signs I didn’t see? That’s right – there were no signs for John Kerry and thus no sign of John Kerry.

Look what your missing Germantown...

Bush rules in Germantown and if this group of middle to upper class southerners is any indication of how the electorate is feeling this November – W. has got things handled.

Unfortunately this election is too close to call, but I can’t help thinking that this little town outside of Memphis will be an accurate weather gauge of the nation.

TK

PS – Isn’t there a 527 out there that can pay someone in Germantown to put a sign in their yard to support Kerry. Do something MoveOn.org – it’s embarrassing for our two-party system.

The Resolve to Fight Terror

Lot's of emotions floating around today - sadness, anger, and for some, loneliness. It seems as if every American can claim one.

Here's another one - resolve...

Not everyone can lay claim to this one though, some have given up the fight and have actually politicized the matter. Who you say? Almost every elected member of the Democratic Political Party in the US House and Senate.

I don't have an issue with any individual who doesn't support the Bush Administration. That's your choice. However democratic politicians seem to fight everything that has been tried to protect this country simply because they are not in power. They are not going to get any credit, a bounce in the poles or a lift in any way.

If you lost someone on September 11th to terrorists I bet you'd do almost anything to bring them back. That's resolve... doing almost anything.

Democrats let's quit fighting, blocking, tearing down and bitching and start working together with this administration.

Whining at the US Open

What is up with Serena Williams at the Open? This woman is INCREDIBLE on the court and I'd rather watch her than anyone other than Agassi or Roddick.

However, the other night was beyond what I could handle. The bad calls she got from the umpire were nothing compared to her unforced errors and unprofessional conduct.

If you can't win at the Open don't WHINE at the Open!

Has anyone told her that those press conferences are taped? Does she really think there was some conspiracy on the part of the chair umpire?

Who is her Sponsor... The GAP?

As one of the top players in tennis she should show more maturity when things don't go her way. In life (and in tennis Serena), it's not what happens, it's what you do about it. After every bad call you still could have whipped JC's butt!

Let's get on that higher road Serena. And now that you have some free time, get over to Sports Authority and buy a decent tennis outfit!
